Watco’s representation on Newsweek’s Top 100 Most Loved Workplaces® list “is a testament to our team members who have worked hard to create a culture that has earned us this ranking,” Watco CEO Dan Smith said.

Pittsburg, Kans.-based Watco—an owner and operator of short lines, terminals, ports and mechanical shops—has been named to Newsweek’s list of the top 100 Most Loved Workplaces®.

Watco came in at No. 92. It was one of two transportation companies on the list. The other: Total Quality Logistics, which came in at No. 15. Also on the list: Harsco (22); BASF North America (52); and U.S. Steel (71).

The list is the result of Newsweek’s collaboration with the Best Practice Institute (BPI), a Florida-based leadership development and benchmark research company, Watco reported on Oct. 6.

Earlier this year, BPI certified Watco as a 2022 Most Loved Workplace® after conducting an employee survey rating working experience, including the alignment of employees’ personal values and Watco’s, the level of collaboration at the company, employees’ feelings about respect and career achievement, and the future of the company. This certification qualified Watco for consideration in the 2022 list of America’s 100 Most Loved Workplaces®, which was published in Newsweek magazine on Oct. 6.

How did companies make the list? “More than 1.4 million employees were surveyed at businesses ranging in size from 50 employees to more than 10,000; some 450 companies were accepted to apply for [BPI] certification as a ‘Most Loved Workplace’ and nearly 300 made the cut,” according to Newsweek.

To identify the top 100 companies, certified companies were evaluated based on employee survey results, analysis of external public rating sites, and direct interviews and written responses from company leaders, Watco reported.

“This honor is a testament to our team members who have worked hard to create a culture that has earned us this ranking,” Watco CEO Dan Smith said. “This recognition reminds us how important it is to have conversations every day about what we can do better and what we do well.”

“As a result of ‘The Great Resignation,’ more companies recognize the importance of focusing on employee satisfaction to not only attract, but [also] retain top talent,” Newsweek Global Editor in Chief Nancy Cooper said. “The businesses on this year’s list clearly demonstrated that commitment.”

In other Watco news, Telegraph, a Chicago-based startup offering a cloud-based operating system for railroads, shippers, logistics service providers and railcar leasing companies, has partnered with the transportation service and logistics company to help shippers with tough logistics challenges, with a focus on rail transportation.
