R.J. Corman on Feb. 6-10 held its eighth-annual Safety Commitment Week to discuss “the importance of safety and building a safety-driven culture,” the company reports.
The safety initiative takes place during the first quarter and spans all 70-plus R.J. Corman locations across more than 20 states. This year, employees were provided safety topic printouts, company-specific material, safety commitment pledges, and other information to be discussed during the five-day period.
Each day, the teams had a “safety stand-down to review the day’s safety topic,” according to R.J. Corman, a diversified railroad service provider, which operates short line railroads, including locomotive and car repair, engineering, and railcar storage; provides logistics services, including material sales, transloading, distribution centers, and switching; and offers construction services, including railroad construction, maintenance-of-way, and emergency and storm work.
The all-company safety themes ranged from the importance of job briefings, training and compliance, safe vehicle operations, and a “proactive personal safety attitude” to the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE). Each segment of R.J. Corman also addressed topics related to their specific functions, and employees received “5 Critical Safety Points” cards to keep on hand, so they can access the information throughout the year, R.J. Corman reports.
Additionally, employees were invited to incorporate the campaign slogan—“I am committed to safety today”—into their daily work and to sign a safety pledge, according to the company, which notes that the pledge “is an annual commitment to safeguarding the well-being of their colleagues and themselves and keeping safety as a priority.” They could also participate in a daily safety quiz and win prizes.
“Safe operations and a safety-first mentality will always be our priority,” R.J. Corman Railroad Group President and CEO Ed Quinn says. “We want everyone to return home safely to their families at the end of the day. I want to thank all our team members for actively participating in this initiative and for their safety commitment every day.”
