CSX and Norfolk Southern are honoring customers for their commitment to the safe transportation of hazardous materials (hazmat).

CSX recognized 72 shippers—representing the chemical, biofuel, waste and fertilizer sectors—as part of its 26th annual Chemical Safety Excellence Award program. The recipients shipped at least 600 carloads of hazmat on the CSX network in 2019 “without release due to controllable factors,” the Class I reported.

Three shippers—Cargill, Kemira and Nouryon Chemical—achieved 10 consecutive years without a release. Fourteen others achieved five years without a release: Americas Styrenics, Celanese, CHS, ExxonMobile Chemical, Gibson Energy, Huntsman International, Husky Energy, Koppers Industries, Messer, Nan Ya Plastics, Norfalco, NOVA Chemicals, Pembina Pipeline and The Chemours Company. Another 55 were also recognized. Together, they shipped a total of 218,000 carloads.

“Through their diligence in maintaining their equipment and loading and securing their shipments, the 2019 award winners have demonstrated a relentless commitment to protecting employees and communities across the CSX network,” Vice President, Sales and Supply Chain Solutions Arthur Adams said.

At NS, 58 customers earned the Thoroughbred Chemical Safety Award, which was established in 1995. They shipped at least 1,000 carloads—a combined total of more than 284,000 carloads—over the network in 2019 without a single incident.

Among the award recipients are: American Zinc Recycling Corporation, The Andersons Inc., Archer Daniels Midland, ExxonMobil Chemical Company, Husky Energy, Irving Oil, Louis Dreyfus Commodities, Occidental Chemical, Olin Corporation (Charleston, Tennessee), Poet Ethanol, Shell Chemical, United Refining Company, Valero Energy Corporation and Vantage Corn.

“We greatly appreciate our customers’ shared commitment to safety as we work together to deliver the goods that are essential to households and businesses across America,” NS Chairman, President and CEO James A. Squires said. “As we navigate the challenges posed by COVID-19, it is more important than ever that we maintain our focus on protecting the health and safety of our families and communities.”

Earlier this fall, Canadian Pacific presented its Safe Shipper Award to 45 customers for safely transporting hazmat in 2019.
