The United Steelworkers union (USW) Local 1976, which represents approximately 600 administrative support and intermodal workers at Canadian Pacific (CP), announced Feb. 9 that it has reached a new tentative agreement with the Class I.

The union will be presenting the contents of the agreement to USW members, which include CP workers in clerical, intermodal, police communications and car compound in locations across Canada, over the coming weeks, with ratification votes wrapping up by the end of the month. Negotiations have been ongoing since November 2022.

“This agreement makes important gains for our members at a time when workers are looking for greater stability and improvements to help cope with the rising cost of living,” said USW Montreal Area Coordinator and Lead Negotiator Nathalie Lapointe.

“By working collaboratively with our valued union partners, we’ve reached another negotiated tentative agreement this year,” said CP President and CEO Keith Creel. “We thank the United Steelworkers for working collaboratively with us throughout this negotiation. This tentative agreement is a testament to the hard work and commitment of both sides.”

CP has successfully negotiated three tentative agreements with its unions in 2023.

The USW represents 225,000 members in nearly every economic sector across Canada and is the largest private-section union in North America, with 850,000 members in Canada, the U.S. and the Caribbean.

Each year, the union says, thousands of workers choose to join USW because of its “strong track record in creating healthier, safer and more respectful workplaces and negotiating better working conditions and fairer compensation, including good wages, benefits and pensions.”

Details of the USW tentative agreement will not be released publicly until the agreement has been ratified.
