CSX has earned a 2022 Environmental Leadership Award from Toyota Logistics Services “for delivering innovative sustainability solutions,” the Class I railroad reported on May 13.

Toyota Logistics Services has presented CSX with the annual award three out of the past four years. One example of the Class I railroad’s “creative approach to environmental improvement attributed to the recognition is an initiative to upgrade air compressor systems at rail yards across the network,” CSX said. “The outdated systems experienced maintenance and operational issues that often resulted in train delays.”

The “dual-redundant smart system” designed by CSX is said to offer improved air load percentage needed for testing; to cut total system run time; to reduce the energy expended; to improve fuel efficiency; and to decrease related greenhouse gas emissions.

“The new air systems allow crews to complete air brake testing without idling the engine,” CSX Director of Fuel Strategy and Utilization Corey Davis said. “This improves CSX’s operational efficiency and drives value for our customers, as well as helps us further reduce our carbon footprint and protect the environment.”

“It is an honor to be recognized by customers for our ongoing commitment to continually improve our stewardship of the environment,” CSX Senior Director of Public Safety, Health and Environmental Raghu Chatrathi said. “Our focus on sustainability and green initiatives throughout our operations has positively impacted our workplace culture, customers, partners and our overall business results.”

In related developments, CSX earlier this year earned a spot on CDP’s 2021 Supplier Engagement Leaderboard, which recognizes companies for their work with suppliers to reduce emissions, and late last year was recognized with a 2021 Climate Leadership Award by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) and The Climate Registry. Also, as part of a special series in Railway Age’s March 2022 issue, 11 North American railroad CEOs addressed what must be done to grow and gain market share from competing freight transportation modes; Jim Foote, President and CEO of CSX, shared that performance, sustainability and innovation are keys to growth.
