Shell Polymers and CSX late last month held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new SIT (storage in transit) yard in McKees Rocks, Pa.

On hand for the April 19 event were Thomas Melodick, Contracting and Procurement, Shell; Kyle Ford, PUM Logistics, Shell; Ryan Bickley, Logistics Manager, Shell; William Watson, GM Monaca, Shell; Joe Kelly, GM Commercial Operations, Shell; Hilary Mercer, SVP, Shell Polymers; Kevin Boone, EVP Sales and Marketing, CSX (recognized as one of 10 Influential Leaders for 2022 by Railway Age readers); Arthur L. Adams Jr., SVP Sales and Marketing, CSX; Sean Ireland, Superintendent Operations, Central Zone, CSX; Rodney Brown, GM Operations, Northeast Region, CSX; Bill Merritt, Director, Industrial Development, CSX; and John Orr, Sales Director, CSX.

Shell Polymers reported via LinkedIn that the SIT yard will allow the company to “temporarily store cars and have them ready to be released at a moment’s notice while also giving us the capability to transload from an existing railcar to a truck if needed.”

It will also “help Shell and CSX ensure timely delivery of plastics,” CSX said via Twitter on May 5. “We’re proud to be Shell’s rail partner and we look forward to realizing this project’s full potential!”

Shell Polymers is currently constructing a petrochemical complex in western Pennsylvania, along the Ohio River, approximately 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh and “within 700 miles of the majority of North American polyethylene buyers,” according to the company. The overall site for Shell Pennsylvania Chemicals/Shell Polymers Monaca is some 800 acres, with a core manufacturing and logistics area of approximately 386 acres. When the facility comes online later this year, the on-site rail yard will operate “24/7/365 to support our operations with approximately 80-100 railcars (hydrocarbon and hopper) a day,” according to Shell Polymers. The plant is expected to create approximately 600 jobs.
