Norfolk Southern (NS) is honoring 48 customers for safely handling products regulated as hazardous materials.

The Class I railroad on Sept. 22 reported that those customers—43 corporate chemical manufacturers and five plants—safely transported or originated 100% of their shipments over its rail network without a single incident last year, earning each one a 2021 Thoroughbred Chemical Safety Award. Typically, hazmat products move in tank cars owned or leased by rail customers, who are responsible for maintaining the cars and ensuring that they are properly secured for transport.

Among the honorees are: The Andersons, BP Products North America Inc., Cargill Inc., ExxonMobil Chemical Company, Kemira Chemicals Inc., Olin Corp., United Refining Company, and Valero Energy Company.

NS’s announcement of its annual awards program, established 25 year ago, comes as the railroad industry highlights Rail Safety Week Sept. 19-25.

“Transporting hazardous materials requires strong working relationships between Norfolk Southern and our customers, which is why they are at the center of everything we do,” NS Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Ed Elkins said. “Together, we are dedicated to safely transporting the materials that move our nation’s economy.”

NS noted that as a voluntary participant in the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care® Partner Program since 1996, it “observes strict standards to identify, reduce, and manage safety risks in chemical transport.”
