Norfolk Southern (NS) has presented its 2020 Thoroughbred Chemical Safety Award to 43 customers for safely handling products regulated as hazardous materials.

Each of the annual award recipients safely shipped or originated at least 1,000 carloads—for a combined total of more than 156,000 carloads—over the NS network without a single incident last year, according to the Class I railroad. Typically, hazmat products move in tank cars owned or leased by rail customers, who are responsible for maintaining the cars and ensuring that they are properly secured for transport.

Among the honorees are: BASF; BP Products North America, Inc.; The Andersons; United Refining Company; and Yellow Freight Roadway Carriers.

Norfolk Southern Chairman, President and CEO Jim Squires

“Against the many challenges posed by a global pandemic in 2020, their safety achievement is even more commendable,” Norfolk Southern Chairmen, President and CEO James A. Squires said. “It is a testament to their ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of employees, the communities we serve and the environment.”

NS noted that as a voluntary participant in the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care® Partner Program since 1996, it “observes strict standards to identify, reduce, and manage safety risks in chemical transport.”

In other developments, NS recently earned Toyota Logistics Services’ 2020 Environmental Award and Kaizen Award for its commitment to sustainability practices and continuous improvement in customer service, respectively.
