Norfolk Southern (NS) worked with 86 businesses to open new or expanded rail-served facilities along its network in 2020. They are expected to generate more than 54,300 carloads of volume annually, the railroad reported.

Shippers—ranging from medical products and roofing shingle suppliers to automakers and paper packing producers—invested $1.8 billion in 70 new and 16 expanded facilities across 18 states. It’s anticipated that the moves will create more than 2,960 jobs for the NS customers.

“Despite the impacts of COVID-19, rail-served industrial development in our service area remained steady overall throughout 2020,” Vice President Business Development and Real Estate Kathleen Smith said. “Norfolk Southern worked closely with customers to help them grow and meet their supply chain needs. We have a solid pipeline of business development opportunity in 2021 and beyond across our automotive and industrial product markets.”

Over the past decade, NS has helped support the location of 872 new or expanded facilities representing $58 billion in private investment and the creation of over 39,700 new customer jobs.
