CN and Canadian Pacific (CP) have again reported record grain moves for November.

CN moved more than 3.12 million metric tonnes (MMT) of Canadian grain last month, following a record high of 3.27 MMT in October and building on monthly records going back to March 2020, it reported.

Containerized grain is also “moving at an unprecedented pace,” CN said, with more than 400,000 metric tonnes shipped from western Canada alone since the crop year began, in addition to the tonnage shipped from eastern Canada.

“We are proud of the role we are playing in keeping the agri-food supply chain moving, and we are preparing for the challenges that the colder months will have in store,” CN Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer Rob Reilly said.

CP announced its “best-ever” November and “second-best-ever month” for shipping Canadian grain and grain products. With 2.96 million MMT transported, it exceeded the previous November record in 2019 by 8% and is second to October 2020 for total monthly tonnage.

CP reported it has moved 11.13 MMT of Canadian grain and grain products in the 2020-21 crop year, rising 15% compared with the same period in the 2019-20 crop year.

“As we reflect on the record movements of grain this crop year, we must think about the hard-working people across the supply chain who’ve helped to feed the world in a year of great adversity,” said Joan Hardy, Vice President Sales and Marketing Grain and Fertilizers at CP.

Both Canadian Class I railroads marked a grain-move first in October: exceeding 3 MMT.
