Employment gains in year, slips from past month

Employment numbers released by the Surface Transportation Board show Class I railroads employed 160, 119 people in mid-November, down 119 positions (0.08%) from the previous month but up 3.27% from November 2010.

The year-over-year gain was highest in the Maintenance of equipment and stores, up 4.35% from a year ago. Professional and administrative logged the only year-over-year decline, down 0.23%, while also falling 0.58% from October. 

Year over year, Executives, officials and staff assistants gained 2.71%; Maintenance of way and structures rose 3.42%; Transportation (other than train and engine) advanced 1.14%; and Transportation (train and engine) moved up 3.79%. 

Compared with the previous month of October, Executives, officials and staff assistants rose 0.47%; Maintenance of way and structures dipped 0.7%; Maintenance of equipment and stores eked ahead 0.16%; Transportation (train and engine) also edged up 0.16%; and Transportation (other than train and engine) rose 0.12%.
