CSX, Kansas City Southern (KCS), Norfolk Southern (NS), and Union Pacific (UP) have earned spots on Newsweek magazine’s fourth-annual list of America’s Most Responsible Companies.

Newsweek and global research and data firm Statista said the 2023 ranking “focuses on a holistic view of corporate responsibility that considers all three pillars of ESG: environment, social and corporate governance.” It is intended “to honor companies that actually mean it when they say they are serious about being good corporate citizens,” according to Newsweek Global Editor in Chief Nancy Cooper. “Talking the talk is easy, but walking the walk is hard.”

To compile the list, Newsweek and Statista reported focusing first on the top 2,000 public companies by revenue and banks and insurance companies with total assets exceeding $50 billion. Following an analysis based on quantitative data from key performance indicator research and the CSR (corporate social responsibility) reputation of each company from a survey of 13,000 U.S. residents, 500 companies were selected and divided into 14 categories.

CSX, which came in at No. 137, was first in the Transport & Logistics category for the second consecutive year. It was followed in that category by NS (No. 154), FedEx (No. 169), United Parcel Service (No. 216), GXO (No. 221), Expeditors International of Washington (No. 292), XPO Logistics (No. 297), KCS (No. 313), UP (No. 340), C.H. Robinson (No. 348), AAR Corp. (No. 427), WESCO International (No. 438), Southwest Airlines (No. 440), Alamo Group (No. 442), Wabtec (No. 493), and The Greenbrier Companies (No. 500). Also on the list, under the Professional Services category, were Harsco (No. 480), Jacobs (No. 32), and AECOM (No. 330); and under the Automotive & Components category, Cummins (No. 35).

“CSX is committed to ‘walking the walk’ in all aspects of ESG—environmental, social and corporate governance—to ensure we are able to deliver on our stakeholders’ expectations not just today, but for the future,” CSX Vice President of Corporate Communications Bryan Tucker said.

“We’re honored to be mentioned among America’s Most Responsible Companies for the fourth year in a row by @Newsweek,” UP wrote in a Dec. 7 Twitter post.

KCS in a Dec. 7 LinkedIn post said it was “pleased” to announce its honor for the fourth consecutive year.
