CSX and Canadian Pacific (CP) are honoring customers for their commitment to the safe transportation of hazardous materials (hazmat).

CSX recognized 71 shippers—representing the chemical, biofuel, waste and fertilizer sectors—as part of its 27th annual Chemical Safety Excellence Award program. Each recipient shipped at least 600 carloads of hazmat on the CSX network in 2020 “without release due to controllable factors,” the Class I reported. Total shipments came in at 238,000 carloads.

Three shippers—Cargill, Kemira and CHS—achieved 10 consecutive years without a release. Twelve others achieved five years without a release: Americas Styrenics, Celanese, ExxonMobil Chemical, Gibson Energy, Huntsman International, INEOS Styrolution, Koppers Industries, Messer, Nan Ya Plastics, Pembina Pipeline, Southern States Chemical and The Chemours Company.

“Through their daily dedication to the safe loading and unloading chemical shipments and the proper maintenance of their railcars, our award winners help ensure that rail continues to be the safest mode for transporting chemicals over land,” CSX Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Kevin Boone said.

Other award winners included: Altivia, American Zinc Recycling, Arkema, Arlanxeo Canada, Ascend Performance Materials, Ashta Chemicals, BP Products North America, Centennial Energy, CF Industries, Chemtrade, Citgo Petroleum, Clean Harbors Environmental, Cornerstone Chemical, DOW Chemicals, Eco-Energy, Flint Hills Resources, Green Plains, Heritage Environmental Service, HJ Baker, Ice Service Group, Indorama, International Chemical, Invista Sarl, Irving Oil, Koch Industries, LSB Industries, Lyondell Chemical, Markwest Hydrocarbon, Methanex Methanol, MHF Services, NGL Supply, Nucor, Occidental Chemical, PBF Holding Company, PCS, Phillips 66, Plains All American Pipeline, Poet Biorefining, Reagent Chemical & Research, Rohm & Haas, RPMG, Sabic Americas, Sabic Innovative Plastics, Shintech Louisiana, Southern States Chemicals, Suncor Energy, Targa Resources, The Andersons, U.S. Government, Union Carbide, United Refining, Univar Solutions USA, US Ecology, Valero Marketing and Supply, Veolia Regeneration Services and Westlake Polymers.

At CP, 51 customers earned the railroad’s Safe Shipper Award for transporting at least 500 carloads of hazmat (non-intermodal) in 2020 with zero non-accidental release (NAR) incidents. A hazmat NAR, the railroad explained, “is the unintentional release of a hazardous material while in railroad possession that is not caused by a derailment, collision or other rail-related accident.”

“Operating safely requires constant vigilance from all participants in the supply chain,” said Coby Bullard, CP Vice-President Marketing and Sales, Energy, Merchandise, Intermodal and Automotive. “CP’s customers play a critical role in safely shipping essential products on our rail network. Encouraging and rewarding safe behavior across every aspect of our business helps to protect our employees and our communities.”
