Canadian Pacific (CP) on May 6 released a 2021 corporate sustainability supplement that includes data on safety, operations and social impact.

The supplement (download below) builds on CP’s 2020 corporate sustainability report, which was published last fall to outline the company’s “successes and achievements on its journey to being sustainably driven.”

Following are highlights from the 2021 supplement:

• In the “Safety” category, CP reported finishing 2021 with its “lowest-ever FRA-reportable personal injury frequency rate. Personal injuries were down 17% from 2020, with a frequency rate of 0.92 per 200,000 employee-hours.” Additionally, the Class I railroad conducted more than 100,000 track inspections, covering more than 2 million track miles, and invested more than $1.5 billion “to further enhance network capacity and improve performance and safety.”

• In the “Operational Excellence” category, CP reported releasing its first Climate Strategy; achieving a 44% improvement in locomotive fuel efficiency since 1990; producing 4,378 MWh of electricity in 2021 through its newly constructed solar energy farm at Calgary headquarters; and transporting 1.28 million scrap rail ties to cogeneration facilities.

• In the “Social Impact” category, the Class I railroad said that it helped raise more than $5.2 million for cardiac causes and pledged $1 million to support recovery efforts following the 2021 Lytton, B.C. wildfire.

CP “follows best practices for disclosure and adapts to evolving sustainability frameworks,” according to the railroad. “CP’s sustainability disclosures are prepared in alignment with the GRI Standards and the SASB – Rail Transportation Framework. CP has also expanded its sustainability disclosure to include reporting aligned with the recommendations from the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure and the company’s contributions toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.”

Canadian Pacific President and CEO Keith Creel

“Measuring and reporting on our sustainability performance is a critical part of our culture of continuous improvement, enabling CP and our stakeholders to evaluate performance and assess opportunities to further our sustainability objectives,” CP President and CEO Keith Creel said.

In related developments, Calgary-based ATCO Group on May 4 reported that it will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for two hydrogen production and refueling facilities in Alberta as part of CP’s Hydrogen Locomotive Program.
