CN, airport authority ready rail relocation plan

Work to reposition rail right-of-way near Gary/Chicago International Airport, Ind., to allow for a runway extension, could begin in October, airport officials said Monday, Aug. 25, 2014.

CN is ready to start work on a connector segment to the CSX Gary branch line within days of a final agreement, expected to be reachedon Oct. 17, an attorney told the airport authority board of directors, according to local media.

CSX is abandoning its Fort Wayne branch line and will relocate to the Gary branch line to avoid crossing CN tracks. rack relocation is necessary to proceed with the extension of the airport’s runway extension. Last week the Surface Transportation Board approved a regulatory document resolving common carrier rights issues on the Fort Wayne branch line.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) South Shore Line includes a stop at Gary Airport/Clark Road Station.
