Canadian Pacific (CP) has donated $124,000 to support heart health in Alberta through its Clear Rounds for Heart initiative. Also, CSX and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) have earned an engineering excellence award from the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA).

CP’s multi-year commitment to Spruce Meadows, an equestrian facility located near Calgary, includes the CP International title sponsorship. For each clear round jumped at the event, including those with time faults, CP donates $10,000 for heart health research and care as part of its Clear Rounds for Heart initiative. The 12 clear rounds by riders at the Sept. 11, 2022 event raised $124,280, which will be donated to the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta, CP reported.

Since its inception in 2014, CP’s Clear Rounds for Heart has raised more than $1 million.

“CP is proud to partner with Spruce Meadows to help shine a light on the important work the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta is doing,” said CP President and CEO Keith Creel, who congratulated rider Daniel Deusser and horse Killer Queen VDM (pictured above) on jumping three clear rounds to win the $3 million CP International Grand Prix.

“We’re grateful to Canadian Pacific for their ongoing support of cardiovascular research in our community,” said Dr. Paul Fedak, Director of Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta, part of University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services. “Proceeds from today’s [Sept. 11] event will support an innovative new program to advance more personalized and precise cardiovascular health therapies that harness the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Together, we can achieve tomorrow’s healthcare today.”

During Masters weekend, CP said it also donated $20 to the Libin Cardiovascular Institute for each of those who participated in CP Has Heart activities, including Interactive Heart Model Building and Hands-only CPR.

In related developments, the CP Women’s Open on Aug. 28 helped CP raise $2.5 million to support the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Foundation and $510,000 for 2022 CP Women’s Open community partner Perth & Smith’s Fall District Foundation.

For their partnership on the $150 million Carolina Connector Intermodal Terminal project, CSX and the NCDOT have received AREMA’s 2022 Dr. William W. Hay Award for Engineering Excellence, CSX announced Sept. 9. The annual award—named for the late Dr. William W. Hay, a railroad engineer and AREMA organization leader—recognizes projects that “advance railroad engineering through innovation, safety, and service performance and reliability.”

CSX described the Carolina Connector Intermodal Terminal as “one of the most technologically advanced intermodal terminals” on its system, featuring three wide-span, zero-emission electric cranes with a lift capacity of 110,000 containers per year. “Most of the container handling is fully automated with operators safely controlling the initial lift and final placement from inside the terminal building,” reported the railroad, which opened the facility in 2021 near Rocky Mount, N.C. “In addition to its remotely operated electric cranes, CCX [Carolina Connector Intermodal Terminal] maximizes safe and efficient truck movement through the facility with CSX’s XGate technology, which automates the in-gate process, streamlines traffic flows and automatically inspects loads leaving the facility.” (Watch project video above.)
