Genevieve Carnes, Railway Alert Network Manager for the Association of American Railroads (AAR), has been named the winner of the 2019 Connie Sumara Memorial Scholarship by the League of Railway Women (LRW).

The scholarship winner was announced by the LRW at its annual conference at the Minneapolis Convention Center as part of Railway Interchange 2019. The $2,000 scholarship was created in 2014 by the LRW to honor the memory of founding member and former president Connie Sumara. The LRW awards the annual scholarship to a qualified student from the rail industry who is pursuing post-secondary studies.

Following service in the U.S. Air Force and support to the Department of Defense missions for more than an additional eight years, Carnes transitioned to the rail industry. For the past four years, she has served on the security team in the Safety and Operations department at the AAR, as the Railway Alert Network Manager.

She has a Bachelor’s of Arts in International Relations from the American Military University, and has earned a cybersecurity certification from Georgetown University, where she is currently enrolled in a master’s program focusing on technology management. She and her husband of 16 years have two children.

“To women who continually balance their railroad careers, families and school all at once, I am honored to call you my colleagues,” Carnes said. “We can attain excellence in all aspects of life—that mountains are meant to be climbed.”
