BTS: October 2022 Transborder Freight Up 13.9%

According to the most recent figures from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), $133.8 billion of North American transborder freight was moved by all modes of transportation in October 2022, up 13.9% compared to the same month last year.

According to BTS, freight between the U.S. and Canada in October 2022 totaled $65.4 billion, up 11.6% from October 2021, with rail making up $9.2 billion of the total freight moved. Freight between the U.S. and Mexico totaled $68.4 billion, up 16.2% from October 2022, with rail making up $7.9 billion of the total.

Railways moved $17.2 billion of freight, up 4.2% compared to October 2021. The top three rail ports between U.S. and Canada include Port Huron, Mich.; Detroit, Mich.; and International Falls, Minn., with the top three commodities reported as computers/parts ($5.7 billion), vehicles/parts ($4.7 billion) and electrical machinery ($2.4 billion). The top three rail ports between the U.S. and Canada include Laredo, Tex.; Eagle Pass, Tex.; and Nogales, Ariz., with the top three commodities reported as electrical machinery ($11.1 billion), computers/parts ($11.0 billion) and vehicles/parts ($6.6 billion).

According to BTS, trucks moved $83.3 billion of freight in October 2022, up 12.9% compared to October 2021; pipelines moved $11.4 billion of freight, up 37.3% compared to October 2021; and vessels moved $10.8 billion of freight, up 22.7% compared to the same month last year.

Additionally, BTS reported that the value of oil increased by 7.4% in October 2022 compared to October­ 2021. Chicago, Port Huron and Minneapolis are the top pipeline connection regions for U.S. energy freight flows with Canada. El Paso, Hidalgo and Laredo are the top pipeline connection regions for the southern border.

The next release of transborder numbers are scheduled for January 26, 2023.
