Newly released Railway Supply Institute (RSI) American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI) data shows that third-quarter 2021 freight railcar orders declined compared to second-quarter 2021, though they remained higher than first quarter orders reported. Deliveries and backlog, however, increased over the previous quarter.

The numbers show that 3Q21 orders fell a steep 9%, by 859 units; while the backlog inched up 1%, by 309 units. Deliveries increased significantly—22%, by 1,473 units.

Each financial quarter, ARCI prepares and distributes statistics on North American freight car orders, deliveries and backlogs to its affiliate members. These statistics include information on covered hoppers (more than 5,500 c/f, 3,500-5,500 c/f, under 3,500 c/f, pressure/non-pressure); open top hoppers (steel, aluminum); gondolas (GB steel, GT steel, GT aluminum); flat cars (non-intermodal, intermodal); non-articulated/articulated intermodal platforms (five-unit, other platforms); boxcar; tank cars and other types.

ARCI, RSI notes, “is the only organization that tabulates and publishes proprietary freight car statistics, and which are available only to ARCI affiliate members. Learn more about accessing the ARCI statistics.
