The February 2023 issue of Railway Age is now available digitally, showcasing our 25 Under 40 “Fast Tracker” honorees.

Railway Age’s “Fast Trackers” awards program, established in 2016, recognizes the top 25 railroaders under the age of 40, who are making an impact in their respective fields or companies.

This year’s honorees were selected from North American freight and passenger railroads; government entities; and supplier, contractor and consultant communities. They were judged on criteria that included industry experience and education, leadership skills, industry contributions, and community service involvement.

“Once again, a strong, strong field of tremendous experience and variety across the depth and breadth of the railway industry across North America,” said Michigan State Center for Railway & Education Director Nick Little, who served as program judge. “This year, I detected a shift away from technical expertise and data provision toward the ability to ask the right questions of the data. These are all very bright, capable and dedicated people.”

Inside the February 2023 issue, you’ll also find feature stories on the:

  • Washington Outlook: Contributing Editor and Chief Policy Officer for Patriot Rail Company Don Itzkoff says 2023 Washington dynamics will challenge rail stakeholders to navigate policy course changes and build on pivotal funding opportunities.
  • So-Cal Rail Renaissance: Contributing Editor David Peter Alan focuses on Southern California passenger rail—what he calls “a rail transit mecca.” While much of its extensive network was ripped up decades ago, agencies like Los Angeles Metro Rail, NCTD, Metrolink and Amtrak are returning the region to its glory days.
  • Notch 8 to the Golden Run: Right Decisions, Right Time, Right Authority. In the final part of a three-part series based on Sonia Bot, Sheppard Narkier and David Sherr’s new book, Dynamic Multi-Level Decisioning Architecture, the authors look at essential success factors.
  • Timeout for Tech With Gary T. Fry, Ph.D., P.E.: In this 14th edition, Fry addresses automated inspection opportunities and limitations.
  • TTC Operated by Ensco: Ensco Senior Railway Research Engineer Matt DeGeorge and Stadler US Inc. Chief of Staff Lucy Andre discuss the operational testing of Stadler FLIRT Diesel Multiple-Unit trainsets at the Federal Railroad Administration’s Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colo.

In addition, American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association President Chuck Baker urges engagement as he shines a light on the association’s milestone anniversary as well as two important industry events: Railroad Day on Capitol Hill, which returns to an “in-person” format on May 17, and ASLRRA’s Annual Conference and Exhibition, to be held April 2-4 in New Orleans. Mark your calendars! Also, Financial Editor David Nahass discusses two powerful trends for the finance side of the North American rail business for 2023: growth and car supply. (“Like the song says,” he writes, “‘Where are the loads? There ought to be loads. Well, maybe next year…”)
