Railway Age’s December 2022 issue is now available digitally, featuring a 2023 Outlook that recommends railroads “Proceed with Caution.”

“Expect in 2023 and extending into 2024 STB actions affecting railroad economic affairs by probably the most active and intense crop of rail regulators in the 135-year history of the Surface Transportation Board (STB) and its Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) predecessor,” writes Railway Age Capitol Hill Contributing Editor Frank N. Wilner in the annual outlook article. “Rails beware.”

Other December articles center on technology:

• Our maintenance-of-way feature, “Making the Grade,” addresses how suppliers are ensuring that crossing surfaces withstand heavy rail and road traffic—and meet customer expectations.

• “Right Decisions, Right Time, Right Authority” is Part I of a three-part series based on Sonia Bot, Sheppard Narkier and David Sherr’s new book: Dynamic Multi-Level Decisioning Architecture, which covers how all industries—including the rail industry, its partners and adjacent competitors—are evolving in the throes of digital disruption and other external forces, and the role people play in decision-making at all levels of an organization.

• In the twelfth edition of “Timeout for Tech with Gary T. Fry, Ph.D., P.E.,” Fry teams with W.N. Marianos, Jr., Ph.D., P.E., Structural Engineer, to focus on railway bridges. While reliable, adaptable and enduring, they’re not everlasting.

And don’t miss commentary by Railway Age Financial Editor David Nahass, who discusses the railcar market and how economic trepidation is making consumers more hesitant to place orders; Frank N. Wilner, who asks, “Will bureaucrats invade the C-Suite?”; and American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association President Chuck Baker, whose group in 2023 will help at least 82 new Members of Congress “understand what we do, how we do it, and how their policy decisions impact the railroad network for good or ill.”

These highlights and more can be accessed in Railway Age’s December 2022 issue.
