Bombardier Transportation is expanding its North American signaling and train control presence through two new rail transit projects.

The first project will deliver Bombardier’s Cityflo 650 communications-based train control (CBTC) technology to Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT). The project is under the auspices of Metrolinx, the GTA’s (Greater Toronto Area) public transportation umbrella agency. Bombardier’s contract with Crosslinx Transit Solutions (a consortium of EllisDon, SNC-Lavalin, Aecon and ACS) is its first train control project in Canada. Bombardier says this is “a significant milestone marking expansion into the Canadian rail signaling market.” Bombardier is also supplying a fleet of Flexity Freedom light rail vehicles for the Eglinton line.

Additionally, Bombardier is starting to install its Innovia APM (automated people mover) system at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, a project that includes its Cityflo 650 technology. Bombardier now has eight airports across the U.S. equipped with Cityflo 650. Among them are San Francisco International, Dallas Fort-Worth and Phoenix International Airports.

“We are particularly pleased to be expanding into Canada, our corporate home market, and be recognized as a trusted supplier across North America,” said Rail Control Solutions Division President Peter Cedervall. “Our solutions move millions of passengers a year, safely and efficiently, while reducing operator costs and increasing capacity, a vital contribution to meeting the demands of urbanization.”

Bombardier Transportation’s signaling and train control presence in the U.S. is based at its Centre of Competence for Automated People Mover systems in Pittsburgh. The Centre is also home to its Rail Control Solutions Centre of Competence for radio-based train control, including Cityflo 650 CBTC technology.
