100% PTC: An ‘Unprecedented Undertaking’

Positive Train Control (PTC) is now in operation on all 57,536 required freight and passenger railroad route-miles, ahead of the federal deadline of Dec. 31, the Federal Railroad Administration reported Dec. 29.

Up for consideration: How a host railroad submits a request for amendment before making certain changes to its PTC safety plan and FRA-certified PTC system, and how PTC system functioning is reported.

FRA Issues NPRM on Streamlining PTC Reporting

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to revise regulations on changes to Positive Train Control (PTC) systems and reporting PTC system functioning.

Safety-Relevant HMI Requirements for Train Control Systems

Requirements for safety-relevant Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for train operators are becoming more common around the world.

Amtrak's PTC systems are expected to be interoperable with its host and tenant railroads by year’s end, but the Amtrak OIG says Amtrak can take steps to better ensure its systems are reliable.

Amtrak OIG: Ensure PTC Reliability

The Amtrak Office of Inspector General (OIG) has recommended in a new report that Amtrak should “better measure” PTC (Positive Train Control) system reliability. It also noted that Amtrak faces two risks that may diminish the safety benefits of PTC.

SFRTA PTC-Certified

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) on Dec. 14, 2020 certified that regional/commuter rail agency South Florida Regional Transportation Authority’s IETMS (Interoperable Electronic Train Management System) complies with the technical requirements for Positive Train Control (PTC), thereby meeting the federally mandated Dec. 31, 2020 final implementation deadline.
