The September 2020 issue of Railway Age is now available digitally. It includes feature stories on machine vision, top-of-rail friction management and digitalizing the Interline Settlement System, as well as a Product and Innovations Showcase spotlighting the rail supply community.

Under the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the coronavirus, many industry meetings and trade shows have gone virtual or have been cancelled, out of an abundance of caution. As the industry’s partner for generations, Railway Age recognized the importance of the supply community continuing to interface with customers. The Product and Innovations Showcase, a special section in the September 2020 issue, shines a bright spotlight on new products and services from nearly three-dozen suppliers.

Machine vision involving automated high-speed, high-resolution camera arrays that gather images and run diagnostics of railcar and locomotive running gear components—wheels, axles, truck frames, bolsters, bearings, springs, brake rigging and hoses, couplers, to name a few—is a rapidly advancing AI (artificial intelligence) area that railroads are using for accurate inspections “on the fly.” Machine vision technologies offer significant time and cost savings compared to manual visual inspections, as well flaw detection before a component fails. These benefits translate directly to the bottom line by improving safety, reducing delays caused by mechanical failure and improving network velocity.

These are just a few highlights from the September 2020 issue of Railway Age, which can be accessed through this link.
