The December 2021 issue of Railway Age is now available digitally.

The annual Freight Rail Outlook addresses what’s in store for next year, as railroads face an uncertain regulatory regime and problematic economy. Our experts—Editor-in-Chief William C. Vantuono, Capitol Hill Contributing Editor Frank N. Wilner and GoRail President Russ McGurk—offer insight. Railway Age Financial Editor David Nahass and American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association President Chuck Baker weigh in, too. Their special op-eds focus on the railcar market (“balancing concerns about ongoing economic growth vs. the possibility of long-term inflationary pressure and the potential for rising interest rates”) and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (which “dramatically increases grant funding opportunities for short lines”), respectively.

Other December articles center on technology and analytics:

• Our maintenance-of-way feature, “A Smooth One,” covers advanced solutions to improve the rail/road interface.

• “By the Wayside,” our C&S and Mechanical feature, explains how wayside inspection equipment is helping freight and passenger railroads ensure that rolling stock operates safety and smoothly.

• And in “New From Railinc: Advanced ETA,” business unit TransmetriQ shares how it is employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning to produce continuous, accurate reporting on railcar locations to improve shipping efficiency and reliability.

These highlights and more can be accessed in Railway Age’s December 2021 issue.
