The April 2022 issue of Railway Age is now available digitally, showcasing our Short Line and Regional Railroads of the Year for 2022 as well as deep-dives into the freight car and crosstie markets.

Railway Age is proud to recognize Vermont Railway (VTR) as Short Line of the Year, and South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad (SKOL) as Regional of the Year. Both leveraged public-private partnerships and teamwork—within their organizations and with other railroads—to repair aging infrastructure and better serve customers.

Also inside the April 2022 issue, you’ll find feature stories on:

• Maintenance-of-Way. What is the market outlook for crossties? The Railway Tie Association and various suppliers offer insight, as well as the latest on products, treatments and tools.

• Railinc Freight Car Review 2022. Senior Data Scientist David Humphrey provides an analysis of the North American revenue-earning fleet. (Spoiler: Heavyweights dominate.)

• San Diego Trolley. U.S. light rail transit’s first modern success story continues to expand after more than 40 years, reports Contributing Editor David Peter Alan.

• Wheel and Rail Fatigue Prevention Strategies. In the fourth edition of “Timeout for Tech with Gary T. Fry, Ph.D., P.E.,” Fry addresses three available approaches.

In addition, Financial Editor David Nahass covers the 2022 Rail Equipment Finance Conference, which included speakers from Railinc, GATX, TrinityRail, FTR Transportation, S&P Global Corporate Ratings, Oliver Wyman, AITX, Residco, National Coal Transportation Association, Watco, Union Pacific and more.

Plus, American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association President Chuck Baker provides an overview of this year’s Railroad Day on the Hill event—with more than 220 Congressional meetings—as well as a sneak peak into the association’s Annual Conference and Exhibition, to be held May 1-3 in St. Louis, Mo.

These highlights and more can be found in Railway Age’s April 2022 digital edition.
