The November 2021 issue of Railway Age is now available digitally, showcasing the honorees of our “Women in Rail” and Short Line and Regional Railroads of the Year award programs for 2021.

Railway Age’s fifth-annual Women in Rail program recognizes 26 visionary women, who are modeling leadership and railroading’s way forward for their peers, their companies and the industry through collaboration and innovation. These outstanding women—plus five earning Honorable Mention—were selected from close to 100 North American applicants.

“It is a privilege to read the stories of women who use their power to support and develop others, and an honor to celebrate their impact,” said KellyAnne Gallagher, CEO of the Commuter Rail Coalition, who served as a program judge with RailUSA LLC President and CEO Barbara Wilson, with input from Railway Age staff.

Another top 2021 highlight for Railway Age: We recognize the R.J. Corman Memphis Line as Short Line Railroad of the Year, and Lake State Railway as Regional Railroad of the Year. The Belpre Industrial Parkersburg Railroad and Grenada Railroad each took home a Short Line Honorable Mention.

The business opportunities and obstacles—in terms of reach or of geography or product movement—may differ for the Railway Age small-road honorees. But their entrepreneurial spirit impacts customers large and small, making efficient business, and business growth, possible with the most efficient surface transport mode: rail.

Inside the November 2021 issue, you’ll also find feature stories on:

• Ballast Machines Making the Grade — How high-production machines perform one of the most critical of m/w functions: keeping ballast in a state of good repair.

• Small-Road Safety — The Short Line Safety Institute has successfully completed 100 Safety Culture Assessments.

• Wayside Equipment Health Monitoring — How suppliers are helping passenger and freight railroads drive efficiency, and a proactive maintenance approach, with remote monitoring technology.

• TTCI R&D — The results of reconditioned bearing tests.

Plus, Railway Age Financial Editor David Nahass addresses the infrastructure bill—from NIMBYs and YIMBYs to the “political moonscape.”

These highlights and more can be found in Railway Age’s November 2021 digital edition:
