Railway Age’s January 2021 issue is now available digitally. It features a cover profile of Canadian Pacific President and CEO Keith Creel—the 58th annual recipient of Railway Age’s Railroader of the Year Award.

“Creel has been instrumental in Canadian Pacific forging a leadership role in the industry, while acknowledging the railroad’s place in history and its role in driving the North American economy forward,” Editor-in-Chief William C. Vantuono writes. “He has helped renew Canadians’ and CP employees’ sense of pride in a company that connected a nation, and connected Canada to the rest of the world. Under his steady hand, and under very difficult circumstances this past year, CP has been a safe, efficient and productive railroad, enabling its customers to connect with domestic and global markets.”

Creel discusses the importance of the 12,000 railroaders he serves with every day—and protecting them and supporting customers and communities throughout the pandemic—as well as how his military background helped prepare him for leadership, his work with Hunter Harrison, Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR), “needle mover” intermodal projects, Positive Train Control (PTC), and more.

Other issue highlights:

• President-elect Joe Biden’s pick for DOT Secretary: Pete Buttigieg, former Presidential candidate and South Bend, Ind., Mayor.

• Passenger Rail Outlook: This special section includes how rail transit agencies will be “building back” after COVID-19 and under a new POTUS, plus how the Commuter Rail Coalition proposes addressing the unique needs of commuter operators—from implementing a liability insurance pool to establishing a commuter rail title.
