27-29: INTRA operability by 2010
Jacksonville, Fla. Ron Lindsey, (904) 386-3082. For the last several years, the rail industry has taken on the technical challenges of INTERoperability by focusing on the locomotive onboard platform. As the AAR’s technical committees continue to resolve the IT and communication issues, the Class I’s are pursuing their singular technology agenda to advance their individual operations. What has yet to be pursued is the concept of INTRAoperability across the industry. There are no efforts under consideration to track key resources across the industry regardless of the owning or operating property. And, as identified in the recent FRA-sponsored strategic wireless study, there are substantial benefits in doing so. “INTRA operability by 2010” consists of several work sessions over three days. Topics include Locomotive Maintenance; Locomotive Management; Fuel Management: interchange, private, and contractor; Security: domestic, shipment, and hazardous material;, Collision Avoidance: trains and workers on or about tracks; Traffic Management: within network, via interchange; Crew Management; Yard Management; and Car Scheduling.       Email: comarch@aol.com

1-4: Railroad Financial Corp. Rail Equipment Finance Conference 2009
La Quinta Resort & Club, California. For 22 years, Railroad Financial Corporation's annual Rail Equipment Finance Conference has provided the answers to vital questions on North American railcar and locomotive fleets: Additions. Retirements. New-car build projections. Values for new and used railcars and locomotives. Projections for future values. Projected surpluses and shortages. An overview of financings and financial structures. Our presenters include nearly 50 of North America’s top rail finance and rail equipment professionals, who provide answers to the tough questions: And in what numbers? What equipment types will likely fall out of favor, decrease in value and perhaps be retired or scrapped? What will likely happen to lease rates and equipment values during 2009? How will this impact residual values in the future? What do locomotive OEM order books look like for 2009 and beyond? How will emerging EPA regulations impact locomotive utility and values? How will fuel costs drive innovation and investments in existing locomotives? REF has been the Gold Standard for information on North American rolling stock. Equipment and rail finance professionals do their homework at Rail Equipment Finance's sessions at the start of the year to assure success all year long. 18-19: Creating Capacity, presented by Railway Age and RT&S
Union League Club, Chicago, immediately following Railway Age's Railroader of the Year Dinner.

Creating capacity is the key to sustained growth. This is a two-day conference addressing critical rail issues with an emphasis on solutions by asset management. Tough times call for an extraordinary commitment to efficiency. This two-day conference will open your eyes to technology and strategy that can make a world of difference when all parties in railroading strive to maximize capital expansion as well as current assets.Rising energy costs, highway congestion, the constraints of trucking and the focus on “green” contribute to the growing demand for railroads, both passenger and freight. The challenge of this conference is to share skills and experience — better utilization, not simply more construction — in search of ways to expand service and contain costs. You’ll find a wealth of answers at this unique gathering of railroad professionals. It’s an opportunity to gain knowledge and grow. It’s an intelligent step toward Creating Capacity. This conference will explore operations, engineering, C&S, mechanical and supply-side innovations that can assure sustainable capacity growth.
