The state of Wisconsin will purchase two 14-car train sets from Las Rozas, Spain-based Patentes Talgo SA to replace current equipment used in Amtrak’s Hiawatha Service between Milwaukee and Chicago. The agreement includes an option to buy two more trains if the state gets federal stimulus money to extend rail service from Milwaukee to Madison, the state capital.
Northern California’s Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) says it’s prepared to target up to $98 million in federal Stimulus Package funding to 10 “shovel-ready” projects, and has the list prepared for federal officials to evaluate March 9, when CCJPA representatives will be in Washington. Total cost of the projects involved is $144 million.
Annapolis, Md.-based ARINC Inc. will design and produce a supervisory control system and communications systems for the Long Island Rail Road’s Harold Interlocking Complex in Long Island City, N.Y. Harold is among the busiest such complexes in the U.S., handling LIRR, New Jersey Transit, and Amtrak train movements as well as some freight activity.
The Obama Administration Feb. 26 unveiled a budget plan that identifies $5 billion in funding over a five-year period for “high speed” passenger rail projects in the U.S., supplementing the $8 billion it provided in its stimulus package for a two-year period.
House Democrats Thursday demanded time to review the $789 billion economic stimulus bill crafted by congressional conference committee, but most political analysts still expected both the House of Representatives and theSenate to approve the measure. Should the package hold until President Obama signs it into law, freight and passenger railroads could benefit significantly.
Freight railroads, particularly Class I railroads, deemed responsible for delays to Amtrak passenger trains using their tracks could befined under new authority granted to the Surface Transportation Board.
