A worker at Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s East Side Access project in Manhattan was killed Thursday evening, causing MTA to halt work on the project.

MTA spokespeople said Michael O'Brien, on the job for two months, was killed by a piece of falling concrete while working in the vicinity of Grand Central Terminal. O’Brien was an employee for Madrid, Spain-based Dragados y Construcciones, S.A., a contractor working on the project. O’Brien’s father, a foreman at the site, was working alongside him at the time.

In a statement, MTA said, “The Metropolitan Transportation Authority wishes to extend its deepest condolences to Mr. O’Brien’s family and his fellow workers.”
