TransLink study favors more Skytrain technology

Written by

Brushing aside mounting complaints of modal bias from some British Columbia rail advocates and Vancouver metropolitan area officials, TransLink says its latest study shows SkyTrain technology is the best bet for expanding rail options to Vancouver and Surrey.

TransLink says SkyTrain, complemented by Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), is preferable to light rail transit (LRT) options. TransLink says it studies show SkyTrain has higher capital costs, but also offers better ridership capacity, better average speeds, and more ancillary transport benefits.

Officials in Surrey have sought LRT instead, arguing the mode is more neighborhood friendly, according to local media and local LRT advocates. TransLink has not yet eliminated the LRT option officially.
