LACMTA OKs Purple Line extension

Written by

Los Angeles County's Metropolitan Transportation Authority has given its approval to the latest regional rail transit extension, a nine-mile addition of the Purple Line subway to Westwood.

Objectors still plan to thwart the project, however, with lawsuits a possibility. Those opposing the project include groups in Beverly Hills, who cite noise and disruption inherent in a subway project, including the threat to the health of Beverly Hills high school students.

Construction is slated to begin next yet, with an initial segment running from Western Avenue to La Cienega, which faces less opposition than the entire route.

Existing Purple Line service, one of two heavy-rail (subway) lines in Los Angeles, currently links Union Station in downtown Los Angeles with the Koreatown neighborhood.
