Contract awarded for WMATA Silver Line Phase 2

Written by

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) has awarded the first of three-design-build contracts for the second phase of Washington Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) Silver Line, which will extend the line from Wiehle Avenue in Reston, Va., to Washington Dulles International Airport, terminating in Ashburn, Va.

Capital Rail Constructors, a joint venture of Clark Construction Group and Kiewit Infrastructure South with Parsons acting lead designer, will be responsible for the $1.2 billion Package A, which covers roughly half of the construction work required for the $2.7 billion project.

A contract for project management services has also been awarded to Jacobs Engineering, continuing the role it performed on Phase 1 of the Silver Line.

The 11.4-mile, six-station extension is due to be completed in 2018, when it will be handed over to WMATA. MWAA says the initial $9.2 billion phase of the Silver Line from Church Falls to Wiehle Avenue is now 90% complete, and on schedule to open later this year.
