Sound Transit is expanding its partnership with Siemens with an order for 30 additional light rail vehicles for the regional transit system serving Seattle and the central Puget Sound area.
The vehicles specifically will help Sound serve the extension projects to Federal Way and downtown Redmond. The order expands on the original contract announced in September 2016 to bring the total number of light rail vehicles Siemens will provide for the region to 152. The options order also includes a $2.5- million agreement for Siemens to provide additional spare parts.

"Ordering more Link cars earlier than planned is just one example of how we're moving forward aggressively to build a light rail network that will serve up to 188 million riders a year by 2040," said Sound Transit Chief Executive Peter Rogoff. The voter-approved extensions are to open in 2024.

Siemens is building the vehicles at its California manufacturing facility in Sacramento.

Delivery of the first LRV is scheduled for early 2019.
