New Orleans mulls next streetcar extension

New Orleans' Regional Transit Authority has begun holding public meetings to seek input for its next streetcar project, the N. Rampart St./St. Claude Ave. expansion. The extension roughly parallels the Mississippi River.

RTA scheduled its first such meeting for Wednesday to solicit comments on the proposed 1.2-mile addition.

The agency's focus follows its successful opening of the Loyola Avenue line late last January year, which preceded the Super Bowl.

Local media report Marigny-Bywater residents, located east of the French Quarter, have ardently supported the idea of streetcar service down St. Claude Ave. to Press St. and Poland Ave. But RTA failed to secure TIGER grant funding for the extension from the federal Department of Transportation.
