The I-225 Light Rail Line, part of RTD's FasTracks program, is expected to cost $350 million. It will extend existing service from Nine Mile Station by about 10.5 miles. The project is slated for completion by late 2015.
RTD General Manager Phil Washington says the agency can afford the extension due to improved revenue projections from the sales tax increase that voters approved in 2004.
In addition, some $280 million in federal funding bestowed on RTD's Eagle P3 project, involving its East Corridor and Gold Line, has freed enough other funding for the entire Aurora project, Washington to local media.
Kiewit made an unsolicited bid for the project last March, surprising RTD, which nonetheless subsequently ruled that the bid was “worthyof moving forward to a competitive procurement process." RTD staff earlier this month recommended Kiewit be selected for the project.
