DDOT last April ordered two cars from United Streetcar for its H Street/Benning Road line in the city’s Northeast, at a cost of $8.7 million. The line is now under construction. DDOT also has three other streetcars already on the property, ordered from Ostrava, Czech Republic-based Inekon Group a.s.
DDOT initially selected United Streetcar last December for its two-car order, but was challenged in court by Inekon, which had submitted a bid of $8.7 million for the order, lower than the original United Streetcar bid of $9.5 million. After rebidding the contract, DDOT again chose United Streetcar last April.
Last month DDOT selected RATP Dev McDonald Transit — a partnership of Fort Worth, Tex.-based McDonald Transit Associates Inc. and New York-based RATP Dev America, a subsidiary of Paris-based RATP Group, to operate and maintain the initial 2.2-mile streetcar line, the first portion of a projected 37-mile system.
Revenue service currently is projected to begin in the summer of 2013. A message on the distict's "dcstreetcar" website notes, "The District's streetcars will begin to be commissioned in December, ensuring that they're track-ready for their H/Benning arrival in 2013."
