Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker wants to decide the matter, but dissenting City Council members are arguing for a role in any decision making.
The Sugar House Streetcar, traversing roughly two miles through its namesake district, is due to open late this year between Utah Transit Authority's TRAX light rail transit Central Pointe Station to McClelland Street (1050 East). The streetcar project, estimated to cost $55 million when including land acquisition, has garnered $26 million in federal funding.
Consensus exists for any extension to reach Highland Drive, roughly one block further east. After that, no agreement is in place, and at least three alignment options have been advanced, according to local media.
