Bombardier Transportation announced Friday it was honored as Manufacturer of the Year at the 2012 Light Rail Awards ceremony, held in London on Wednesday. The company said it was the third year in a row it landed the honor.

Oliver Schmidt, Vice President Sales and Products Light Rail Vehicles, and Elaine Greenwood, Sales Director Light Rail Vehicles, represented the company as it received the award from Britain's Undersecretary of State for Transport Norman Baker.

Bombardier also was awarded the status "Highly Commended" in the Supplier of the Year category above 10 million euros ($13 million).

Said Schmidt, "This award underscores our capability as a provider of light rail solutions and as a reliable partner for transport operators worldwide."

In awarding the honor, the judges said, “With over 100,000 trams and railcars running worldwide, this firm has a great range of well-proven products and Blackpool right here in the UK has become the world’s showcase for 16 examples of its latest and greatest product, the FLEXITY 2. This year’s highly commended winner has scooped major awards from six cities around the world over the last year – and 2012 isn’t over yet so we’re sure there will be more knocking at their door.”
