Bombardier lands orders in Austria, Germany

Bombardier Transportation on Monday said it had landed two significant orders, one for 32 streetcars (trams) by Innsbruck, Austria, and a second involving TWINDEXX Vario double-decker electric multiple-unit (EMU) trains for Germany's Deutsche Bahn AG (DB).

Austrian operator Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe & Stubaitalbahn GmbH has placed a $57 million order for 32 FLEXITY Outlook trams, similar to those operating in Marseille, France, with Bombardier also performing "the complete service management" for the operating agency; the agency's own employees will continue to handle standard maintenance.

Martin Baltes, CEO Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe & Stubaitalbahn GmbH said, "We were aiming for service and maintenance agreement that was economic and also cost-efficient in the long term. With Bombardier we found partner who supported this goal."

Bombardier Transportation Vice President Services Central Europe Michael Fohrer said, "This innovative maintenance concept will set standards in our industry. The close cooperation of IVB as operator and Bombardier Transportation as Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and service partner ensures a successful delivery of a high fleet availability and reliability."

In Germany, Bombardier will supply five additional double-deck EMUs to Deutsche Bahn AG, worth roughly $64 million, to supplement an earlier order of 135 such units for long-distance service, along with 18 intermediate coachs and 16 trains for regional service. DB recently won the contract to operate Germany's North-South rail network in a Europe-wide tender, Bombardier notes.

The new TWINDEXX Vario double-deck trains (shown in the artist's conception above) each comprise two power cars and two to three intermediate coaches. The trains will transport passengers at speeds of up to 160 km/h (100 mph) between the Baltic coast and the German states of Brandenburg, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Saxony-Anhalt.

"The new double-deck trains from Bombardier offer regional passengers a high degree of comfort and operators a flexible solution to meet today's rail transportation needs. Combining high capacity with greater flexibility is the hallmark of the latest generation TWINDEXX Vario trains", said Dr. Roman Muller, Bombardier Transportation's vice president Sales, Germany.
