The groundbreaking train's design by LundbergDesign, a consultancy in Stockholm, was selected from a field of entries by 1,800 manufacturers and designers from 58 countries, Bombardier said.
Working in close cooperation with teams from Bombardier Transportation and SJ, the designers created the SJ 3000, based on the Green Train research project run by Bombardier and Swedish authorities and research institutions in Sweden.
"The Red Dot Award is proof that that we have succeeded in creating what we set out to achieve—a modern, comfortable and beautiful train," said Jan Olson, director of Business Development at SJ.
"The SJ 3000 has a design that stands out in its simplicity," said Olle Lundberg, CEO of Lundberg Design. "The polished stainless steel exterior is a stylish and smart choice. From an environmental point of view we avoid unnecessary painting and thereby reduce the weight and also the energy consumption during operation."
Inside the train, passengers benefit from harmonious colors and materials as well as the careful design of seats, lighting, digital screens, luggage, and mobile phone areas. All seats have individual light, power, and Internet access. In the first class section, personal space is enhanced with larger head rests that screen out sound and reduce the field of vision. An adjustable table allows for a more ergonomic work space. Complementing the comfortable interior, the train's bistro car combines the simplicity of Scandinavian design with Mediterranean elegance.
Bombardier says the SJ 3000's extra-wide carbody has been used to create comfort and space in an efficient layout. The train provides easy access for all passengers with large vestibules, braille signs, and wheelchair-friendly passenger boarding.
