New Jersey Transit says ticket vending machines now cover every station in its statewide rail system, and advises passengers to use them in order to avoid a ticket surcharge if boarding any train without a ticket.

"Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) have been installed at all NJ TRANSIT rail stations. The new TVMs are available at all times, and accept cash, credit, or debit cards," NJT announced on its website. "NJ TRANSIT Policy requires an additional charge of $5 be applied to all tickets purchased onboard the train when a ticket agent or TVM is available at your boarding station."

NJT said the new systemwide surcharge policy takes effect March 1.
