RailAmerica traffic up 10.7% in April

RailAmerica, Inc. says its 40 short lines and regional railroads carried 73,136 carloads of freight in April, up 10.7% from April 2009. These results exclude the discontinued Ottawa Valley Railway operation.

The company reported increased shipments in eight out of twelve commodity groupscompared to April 2009. Much of the increase was due to shipments of waste andscrap materials, chemicals and metallic ores, and metals. The largest declineswere in coal and pulp, paper, and allied products.

RailAmerica roads operate approximately 7,400 miles of track in 27 U.S. states and threeCanadian provinces.
