A program called E-Railsafe, described as “a brainchild of Union Pacific,” is working on railroads throughout the U.S. and Canada to help ensure that third-party contractors implement recommended safety and security procedures.

As described by Union Pacific in an announcement Wednesday, E-Railsafe ensures that third-party contractors working on railroad property “complete railroad safety training courses and a railroad security awareness course; acquire a contractor photo identification credential; and pass a criminal history check.”

Dennis E. Johnson, assistant vice president-Union Pacific police chief, said that in addition to benefits for railroads and their communities and customers, E-Railsafe “also delivers benefits to contract companies by ensuring a professional background check that could be useful to making employment decisions, providing exposure to railroad safety and security awareness training, and offering a software program that can serve as a human resources employee documentation tool.”
