Crossing and trespassing fatalities jump

U. S. railroad fatalities in the five-month period January-May 2010 totaled 299, up 16.3% from the same period last year. Significant increases in grade crossing and trespassing fatalities were responsible.

Crossing fatalities in Janary-May this yea were up 15.7% from the 2009 period to 103. Trespassing deaths increased 16.6% to 187.

Employee fatalities remained comparatively low: seven in the 2010 period vs. nine a year ago and ten in 2008.

A total of 730 reporting railroads (vs. 741 a ear ago) notified the Federal Railroad Administration of 4,389 accidents and incidents in this year's first five months, down 26.7% from last year.

Train accidents declined 6.6% to 736, with collisions clown 11.9% to 52,derailments down 4.6% to 520, and yard accidents down 1.7% to 401.
