Axion International Holdings, Inc. said May 22 that it has received a purchase order for ECOTRAX specialty rail ties from Edmonton Transit System, to be applied on the Albertan capital's light rail transit system.

The ties will be used specifically for grade-crossing locations, New Providence, N.J.-based Axion said.

ECOTRAX™ composite rail ties are made from recycled plastic. Axion said the ties for the Edmonton order would tap more than 150,000 pounds of plastic "taken out of the landfill stream."

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with Edmonton on their first purchase order of ECOTRAX™ ties which are engineered to deliver high value and durability, particularly in road crossing applications in northern climates," stated Cory Burdick, Axion's ECOTRAX™ sales manager.
