NICTD, a 4-county regional commuter railroad headquartered in Chesterton, IN (1 hour outside Chicago) is looking for an experienced railroad/public transportation professional to serve as its next General Manager/CEO.  The successful candidate will build on the solid foundation and reputation that the incumbent, who is retiring later this year, has created over the last 30 years running the renowned “South Shore” commuter rail service between South Bend, IN and Chicago, IL.

With 250 represented and 50 management employees (including police), South Shore’s $38 million annual operating budget supports 41 trains each weekday, carrying over 12,000 passengers.  Combined with 21 weekend trains carrying 5,000, the railroad serves 4 million customers/yr.  Fares cover approximately 48% of the total operating budget.  In addition, NICTD invests $15M/yr in capital improvements to keep its 99 miles of track, 13 stations, bridges, signals, catenary systems and 82 single and multi-level railcars in a state of good repair.

The successful candidate must have exceptional interpersonal skills and be responsible for working closely with the NICTD Board and its Chair to conduct all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the South Shore system, including finance and administration, planning, policy analysis, procurement, contract management, capital project implementation, marketing, customer service, legal, technology and safety.  He or she will be particularly adept at handling external relations and partnerships with federal, state and local stakeholders, funding & regulatory partners, FTA, FRA, DHS, as well as Metra, Amtrak, and an exclusive freight franchise using NICTD’s right of way.

The next General Manager/CEO will also generate support for/execute NICTD’s recently released 20-Year Strategic Business Plan, which proposes over a billion dollars to expand and maintain the system to ensure continued world-class customer service.

NICTD offers excellent benefits and competitive salary.  For a complete job description, go to   To apply, submit a resume, cover letter and salary history in confidence to Christopher Boylan, Harris Rand Lusk Executive Search at:
