Salary: $120,642 - $174,931

The San Mateo County Transit District is the administrative body for public transit and transportation programs in San Mateo County, California: SamTrans bus service, Redi-Wheels paratransit service, Caltrain commuter rail service and the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. Caltrain is the commuter rail system covering San Francisco to Silicon Valley in sunny Northern California. We serve the most dynamic and fast-paced economy in the country. Caltrain is in the process of modernizing its rail system including the advancement of several infrastructure and systems projects. These include the installation of its PTC solution and electrifying the railroad as part of the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project (PCEP), making this an exciting time in the 150-year history of the railway, and one that offers many opportunities for growth. The $1.98 billion electrification project, which is expected to be operational by 2021, will improve Caltrain’s system performance and capacity so we can accommodate more riders on more state of the art electric trains. The Deputy Director, Rail Vehicle Maintenance is a newly created position with overall responsibility for the oversite of the rolling stock and related facilities maintenance programs for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain). Incumbent will also be responsible for developing and implementing programs for maintaining, servicing, and repairing all Caltrain rolling stock; oversight of the Caltrain Central Equipment and Maintenance Facility (CEMOF) building maintenance and improvements; oversight of rolling stock acquisitions for Caltrain including Electric Multiple Units (EMU); responsible for the daily maintenance and operation of rolling stock, including Electric Multiple Units (EMU) and diesel fleets; represent Caltrain in industry group meetings and programs such as Commuter Rail Operator’s Group (CROG), American Public Transportation Association (APTA), and Locomotive Maintenance Officers Association (LMOA); and the analysis of the bus and commuter safety, security and state of good repair for the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) and Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain).
The ideal candidate will have an Associate Degree in Business Administration or related field with eight (8) years of increasing responsibility in vehicle maintenance program administration, plus four (4) years supervision of vehicle maintenance staff. Must have a high degree of multi-tasking skills, demonstrated ability to use initiative and independent judgment, positive leadership qualities, integrity, credibility, and the ability to motivate people, and must possess effective written, verbal and presentation skills.
