The NYC Transit Department of Subways Division of Car Equipment Engineering & Technical Support (CEE & TS) is responsible for all aspects of maintenance standards, engineering, configuration control, and documentation control for all revenue subway cars and non-revenue work equipment. CEE & TS is comprised of the Maintenance Standards & Procedures, Car Systems Engineering, New Rail Technology & CBTC, New Car Engineering, and Contract Administration groups. CEE & TS responsibilities include but are not limited to establishing maintenance and inspection practices in support of the SMS program, providing engineering services to support safe and reliable operation of revenue and non-revenue equipment, implementation of new technologies and CBTC deployment, development of technical specifications and program management for new car procurements, administration of contracts for capital and operating budget programs, and control of all documentation under these groups.


Engineering & Technical Support provides support to the Maintenance and Overhaul shops and other NYCT divisions while ensuring engineering, maintenance, including the SMS Program, and material standards are established. The unit performs project management of new car procurement programs. It identifies equipment funding sources and provides asset management and commodity control once the equipment is delivered.


Car Systems Engineering (CSE) provides engineering support and training to the Maintenance and Overhaul shops and interacts with internal and external NYCT stakeholders to ensure the safety and reliability of all revenue car fleets. CSE’s responsibilities include the review and approval of design documentation, preparation of engineering documents such as upgrade bulletins, safety notices, and drawings, development of test protocols, component and system qualifications, and preparation of test and investigation reports.


NYCT Division of Car Equipment is seeking to hire multiple Transit Railcar Technology Specialists to assist in the development of the Scheduled Maintenance System (SMS), which works on a 4, 6 and 12 year cycle, conduct teardowns, develop overhaul and maintenance procedures, prepare for Bill of Material (BOM) and to develop overhaul kits to support NYC Transit SMS program. The incumbents will review technical documentation such as test procedures and illustrated parts catalogs; perform research on parts and update/setup material specifications and standards in the NYCT Commodity Management System.


NYCT Division of Car Equipment is seeking to hire a Transit Railcar Technology Specialist for the Car Systems Engineering group. The incumbent will perform technical investigations and conduct analyses to develop technical solutions to improve existing subsystems and components and provide ongoing technical support and training to the Overhaul and Maintenance Shops.


Additionally, the Transit Railcar Technology Specialist will review and prepare engineering analyses, technical documentation and inspection procedures; prototype engineering modifications to subways cars, and conduct inspections during test periods and evaluate performance; develop and recommend corrective action programs designed to ensure proper functioning of these systems; schedule, monitor and analyze performance tests, prepare reports and provide technical support to maintenance personnel.

Education and Experience Requirements:

1. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, plus:
(a) Two years of full time satisfactory experience performing one of the following: (i) Specialized work reviewing the design of railcars of moderate complexity; or supervising and inspecting the installation of electronic and/or electromechanical railcar components; OR

(ii) Preparing plans and technical specifications for railcar equipment subsystems; and
(b) Four years of full time satisfactory experience as a fully trained mechanic in one or a combination of the following fields:
(i) Railroad power-operated railcar engineering and repair; or supervision of railcar maintenance, manufacture or installation; OR

2. A four year vocational/technical high school diploma with a major sequence of courses in electrical, mechanical or electronic technology, or a closely related field, plus two years of full time satisfactory experience described in "1 (a)" above and three years of the full time satisfactory experience described in "1 (b)" above; OR

3. An associate degree from an accredited college with a major sequence of courses in electrical, mechanical, civil, transportation or computer engineering or electrical/electronic technology, plus two years of the full time satisfactory experience described in "1 (a)" above, and two years of the full time satisfactory experience described in "1 (b)" above; OR

4. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a major sequence of courses as described in "3" above, plus two years of the full time satisfactory experience described in "1 (a)" above; OR

5. A master's degree from an accredited college in one of the major fields described in "3" above plus one year of the full time satisfactory experience described in "1 (a)" above.

Desired Skills:

- Experience in a Rapid Transit Environment;
- Strong communication, writing and organizational skills;
- Thorough knowledge of engineering principles applied to Car Equipment and systems design;
- Familiarization with Car Equipment performance specifications and/or technical requirement as capital projects;
- Ability and the desire to work in field environments such as Car Equipment Maintenance Facilities to support ongoing operations;
- Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders such as NYC Transit Department of Subways (Rapid Transit Operations, Maintenance of Way) Office of System Safety (OSS), Division of Material (Procurement), NYPD and FDNY to provide technical support for system upgrade, modification or car procurement;
- Familiarization with design review, testing, and qualification of systems and equipment;
- Strong capability to use software programs such as Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign/Frame Maker to perform document processing, presentations and database management;
- Proficient in MS Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint.
